Mission

The purpose of the Teacup Nordic Education and Development Program is the following:

  • To introduce kids to Nordic skiing through a fun and engaging group learning experience.
  • To facilitate the teaching and learning of excellent skiing.
  • To foster personal empowerment, character and growth that develops through the life-long sport of skiing.

The Teacup Nordic Education and Development program has three components. Select a program below for more information:

Teacup Nordic Youth Program

The youth program is for kids age 8-14. We meet at Teacup on Sunday mornings during the winter.  Practice time will be 10:30-Noon. Our first session will be January 7. We will meet for 8 consecutive Sundays.

We share a belief that developing young Nordic skiers is best achieved by learning the fundamentals of classic skiing first, before introducing skating. Our approach to teaching reflects a strong emphasis on good classic skiing technique.

The youth program is taught by volunteer instructors that have been trained in the best practices of ski instruction pedagogy.  Lessons are fun, engaging, and encouraging with identified outcomes.  We place a premium on kids having fun, falling in love with the sport of skiing and on becoming excellent skiers.  Preparation for racing is not the priority with the youth program, but opportunities will be available to participate in local races.

Key Dates for the Youth Program:

  • Sunday, January 7: First practice at Teacup, 10:30AM
  • Sunday, January 14: Practice at Teacup, 10:30AM

Junior Development Program

The Teacup Junior program is designed for high school ages skiers to create personal growth in skill, fitness, determination, and character through the experience of the high demand of cross country ski racing.  Coaching emphasizes excellent technique and training physiology concepts during regular practices on snow at Teacup during the winter months.  Athletes in this program attend Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) sanctioned Junior National Qualifier races held at various venues in the PNSA region.  Further, personal goal setting of any participant allows them to compete in local citizen races, for their high school team, or simply to log personal improvement. It is not necessary to be an experienced skier to be in this program, just a strong desire to improve!

The on-snow training season begins around Thanksgiving and concludes in early March.  Practice times are Monday and Wednesday at 4:00PM and Sundays at 9:00AM.

The coaching staff is led by Karl Andersson, a United States Ski Association (USSA) Certified Nordic Coach. This certification not only ensures coaching at established national quality, it also includes rigorous background checks.

We are proud of our record with this program. Teacup athletes frequently place well in Qualifier races and some go on to compete at Junior National Championships. Former athletes from this program continue to ski out of a love for this sport as competitors, coaches, or simply a lifestyle choice.  Other participants have used this program as an effective wintertime cross training outlet to enhance their primary sport of running, rowing, paddling, cycling as well as other endurance sports.
